Window Tint Construction

Solar window films are slim, multi-layered pieces of optically clear film that are fitted to the interior face of glass to help you save considerably on energy costs, maintain a more comfy and productive environment, decrease internal fading and improve outside appearance. Solar films are coated with durable, exotic metals such as titanium, stainless steel, copper, gold, silver, chromium, aluminum and other alloys. These varying combinations of metals are what give the solar tint it’s exceptionalContact Us Email Us Online Quote performance. All of today’s quality window tints are based on multilayer polyester films. These films are arranged in many ways and with many varying coatings to obtain different characteristics for both heat block and appearance. The layering of the window tint starts with the adhesive resin, polyester films then a scratch proof coating.

1. MOUNTING ADHESIVE There are a couple of different types of mounting adhesive used with the construction of window film. In Australia the most effective and common mounting resin used in home and commercial window tinting is what is known as dry adhesive. This resin does not seem to be sticky but once activated permanently bonds to the glass. This adhesive has been used for many years and has proven to be the most effective flat glass adhesive that will stand the test of time in the harsh Brisbane and Gold Coast summer sun. It is also used as the application is a little more practical. Adhesives usually help in reducing UV radiation also. Safety and security film use a similar adhesive to automotive tinting this is known as pressure sensitive adhesive. This resin isn’t used heavily in the residential and commercial solar film industry but still has useful application in specialized films.

2. CLEAR UV POLYESTER FILM Usually after the first adhesive resin come a UV treated layer of clear polyester film. This film helps with filter of UV rays and in turn protects the polyester and metalized layer behind it. This layer is also a major reason why solar window tinting if placed on the outside of the glass will break down. Because window tinting is constructed so that this layer protects the other layers.

3. LAMINATING ADHESIVES because window tint is laminated together, a specially designed laminating adhesive is used in between each polyester and metal layer. These adhesives are crystal clear and often used multiple times in the construction of most window tinting.

4. DYED POLYESTER LAYER If a film has this layer it usually is positioned as one of the final layers. Not all window tint has this layer but once again different films require different characteristics, and many low reflective window tints will incorporate this layer. High quality film manufacturers have over time have come up with extremely colour stable dyes that won’t turn purple. This is not always the case for inferior products where cheap materials are still used.

5. SCRATCH RESISTANT COATING this is the final coating put on window tinting, safety and security films. It is an ultra tuff coating that will help prevent the delicate laminated films from scratching. Once again top manufacturers have developed the toughest scratch resistant coatings on the market, whilst some inferior window tint comes with no scratch resistant coating at all.
